What is a Trigger Point Injection?

What are the benefits of a Trigger Point Injection?
Myofascial pain, or trigger points, can results from muscle overuse or repetitive strain. Poor posture, muscle injury, stress and tension can all lead to myofascial or muscular dysfunction. Injecting in these trigger points can aid in pain relief, improved muscle function, and is minimally invasive.
How does a Trigger Point Injection work?
A Trigger Point Injection is an injection(s) to target painful muscle tissue. The mechanism of action in a TPI is two-fold. First, the needle disruption breaks up the tight muscle fibers and stimulates blood flow, helping the muscle relax. Second, the medication effects work to 1) numb the area, interrupt pain signal transmission, and relax the muscle, and 2) reduce inflammation and prolong pain relief.

What to expect after the procedure?
Trigger Point Injections are usually performed in under 15 minutes with the patient’s ability to go home the same day after a short recovery period. Patient’s may experience mild soreness or pressure at the injection site (similar to a flu shot). Using ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers can help, as also can gentle stretching to reinforce the muscle release. Most patients notice progressive pain relief within a 2 to 3 days.
