Reactiv8

What is Reactiv8?

ReActiv8 is an implantable neurostimulation device designed specifically to treat mechanical chronic low back pain, particularly caused by dysfunction or weakening of the lumbar multifidus muscles

What are the benefits Reactiv8?

ReActiv8 neurostimulation is designed for people whose pain is driven by multifidus muscle dysfunction (weakness or atrophy of deep spinal stabilizing muscles). By stimulating the nerve supply to these muscles, it helps restore proper muscle control and spinal stability.

Common Indications:
– Chronic low back pain (>3–6 months)
– Multifidus muscle dysfunction or atrophy, confirmed via MRI or physical exam
– Not responded to conservative treatments
– Not suitable for spine surgery

How does Reactiv8 work?

ReActiv8 neurostimulation delivers electrical pulses to stimulate the multifidus muscles, causing them to contract and relax. This helps reactivate and strengthen these spinal stabilizers over time.

How to prepare for Reactiv8?

The first step to determine your eligibility to receive ReActiv8 neurostimulation is to perform a thorough physical examination and carefully consider your medical and family history.

-Blood thinners (e.g., aspirin, Plavix, Eliquis, warfarin):
You will need to stop them before the procedure to reduce bleeding risk. Only do this under medical supervision.
– Medical Clearance (if needed)
If you have heart conditions, bleeding disorders, or infections, your provider may require clearance from your primary doctor or specialist.

What to expect after the procedure?

ReActiv8 stimulators are implanted via a surgical procedure. A small incision is created to insert the electrodes to target the nerves to the multifidus muscles. Those electrodes are then passed through the skin and into the upper buttock area, where the pulse generator will be implanted. It is usually performed in under 90 minutes with the patient’s ability to go home the same day after a short recovery period.
