What is Joint and Bursa Pain?

Joint or Bursa pain refers to pain or discomfort due to inflammation or soreness originating from either a joint (shoulder, knee, hip, etc) and/or a bursa (subacromial bursitis, pes anserine bursitis, trochanteric bursitis, etc).

What causes Joint and Bursa Pain?

Shoulder pain – pain can be caused by rotator cuff tendinopathy, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis, osteoarthritis, or impingement syndrome.

Knee pain – pain can be caused by osteoarthritis, meniscal tear, ligament injury, bursitis, or patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Hip pain – pain can be caused by osteoarthritis, labral tear, bursitis, or referred pain from the lumbar spine.

What do patients commonly experience?

Shoulder pain – Localized shoulder pain with limited range of motion, especially overhead; may radiate to upper arm.

Knee pain – Pain with walking, bending, or weight-bearing; may be associated with swelling or instability.

Hip pain – Groin or lateral hip pain, often worsened by walking, standing, or rotating the leg.

How is it diagnosed?

The first step to diagnose joint pain is to perform a thorough physical examination and carefully consider your medical and family history.

How is it treated?

Some of the treatments for Joint or Bursa pain include:

  • Medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections
  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections
  • Nerve blocks/Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
