What is Low Back Pain?

Low back pain refers to discomfort, stiffness, or aching in the area of the back between the lower rib cage and the buttocks. It is one of the most common medical complaints worldwide.

What causes Low Back Pain?

  • Myofascial pain / Muscle Strain or Spasm: Pain is typically localized, may be associated with muscle spasm. Can be associated with stress or poor ergonomics.
  • Lumbar Spondylosis / Facet Joint Pain: May cause stiffness, chronic pain, and decreased motion
  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal or foramina. Causes neurogenic claudication: leg pain with walking or standing, relieved by sitting.
  • Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain: Pain in the buttocks or low back, that may radiate to the thigh

What do patients commonly experience?

Pain that is localized, radiating, intermittent or constant, and it may significantly affect daily activities, work, and quality of life.

  • Dull, aching, or sharp pain in the low back region
  • Often worsens with movement, prolonged sitting, or standing
  • Difficulty bending forward, twisting, or standing upright
