It’s Not All in Your Head—But Your Brain Is Listening

You’ve probably heard it before—maybe from a well-meaning provider, a friend, or even your own inner critic: “It’s probably just stress.” While stress absolutely impacts our health in profound ways, that statement often ends the conversation instead of opening it.

In my experience, when people are told their symptoms are “just” stress-related, they’re left feeling unheard, dismissed, and sometimes even ashamed. But here’s the truth: stress isn’t imaginary—and neither are your symptoms.

Stress plays a biological role in almost every system of your body. Chronic stress can disrupt hormonal balance, impair digestion, spike inflammation, suppress the immune system, and even alter the way your brain processes pain. In other words, stress is very real—and your body is listening.

But here’s the deeper issue: stress may not be the root problem. It may be a signal that something else is off. In functional and integrative medicine, we go beyond symptom management to ask bigger questions:

  • What’s keeping your nervous system in a constant state of alert?
  • Are your hormones working in harmony?
  • Is your gut microbiome contributing to inflammation or mood dysregulation?
  • Are your sleep patterns and blood sugar levels supporting or sabotaging your recovery?

I work with many patients who come in with symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, or joint pain—symptoms that have been dismissed as psychological. But through comprehensive evaluation, we often uncover imbalances that have been brewing under the surface for years.

The solution isn’t to suppress the symptoms. It’s to decode them.

So if you’ve been told “it’s all in your head,” I want you to know: I believe you. Your symptoms matter, and they deserve to be explored with compassion and curiosity—not judgment. Together, we’ll get to the root and find a path forward.
